Fifteen French tourists on a cross-country tour of the United States suffered minor injuries Wednesday when their van plunged off U.S. 395 about four miles north of the Inyo County town of Independence, authorities reported.

The injured--including five teen-agers--were taken to two hospitals, where most were treated for cuts and bruises and released. One victim was admitted for tests and overnight observation, hospital officials said.

The van, one of two in the group’s convoy, was traveling north on the highway when it plunged down a 10-foot embankment, struck a boulder and crashed through a fence, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Ray Dixon said. He said the cause of the accident was unknown.
