Countywide : Escaped Jail Inmate Rearrested at a Home

A convicted thief and drug user who escaped from custody last month while serving on an Orange County work crew was rearrested Thursday at an Anaheim home, sheriff’s officials said.

Raul Abram, 36, who was serving the fifth month of a 10-month sentence for grand theft and drug possession, surrendered without incident when sheriff’s deputies approached him at 11:45 a.m., Lt. Richard J. Olson said. He now faces up to an additional year in jail if convicted on charges of felony escape.

Abram turned up missing June 15 while working at a county landfill in Irvine. Olson said it is still unclear whether Abram simply walked away from the crew or had another means of escape.

Abram was being held at the James A. Musick Branch Jail, a minimum-security facility, before his alleged escape. Olson said he is now being held at the Central Men’s Jail in Santa Ana.

To be eligible to serve on work crews that leave jail grounds, an inmate must be deemed a low risk to flee and must not have a history of violence.
