Magic vs. the Garv: One Reader’s Answer

Share

So a local marketing man doesn’t understand why “Magic is a hero and Steve Garvey was an outcast (July 13).” Let me tell him.

Magic never pretended to be a paragon of virtue. He never set himself up as “Mr. Clean,” a morally upright ballplayer whom I, as a teacher, used as a model example to my impressionable teen-age students.

Magic expressed regret at not having been more responsible, and I admire him for it. Garvey, who was once my hero, is nothing more than a scumbag. He deserves the ostracism he has received.
