Louisiana Clinic Site of Abortion Protest
About 700 anti-abortion demonstrators gathered at the city’s only abortion clinic Saturday in a low-key protest, the first since police removed a fence that guarded the site during a week of confrontations.
The fence was erected in early July at a cost of $8,000. About 60 people were arrested during protests July 6-12 and an anti-abortion group, Operation Rescue, failed in legal efforts to have the barrier removed.
Saturday’s anti-abortion protesters were met by a line of police officers at the clinic. About 100 abortion-rights advocates were stationed on the clinic grounds.
