A 19-year-old Santa Ana man was shot twice Monday afternoon by a gunman in a passing car as the victim talked with friends, police said.

Friends drove Juan Monjaras to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and right forearm, police and hospital officials said.

Monjaras was visiting a friend in the 200 block of North Maxine Street and left the friend’s house shortly after 1 p.m. to buy a soda, said Maureen Haacker, a Santa Ana Police Department spokeswoman.

A short distance from the house, Monjaras began talking with a group of friends in a car parked along North Maxine Street, Haacker said.

Without warning, a gunman in a red car traveling south along the street fired several rounds at the group, hitting Monjaras twice, Haacker said.

No one else in the group was injured, said detectives, who did not have any further description of the gunman’s car.

Investigators said they do not know why Monjaras was shot or if he or any of the people in the car were gang members.

No arrests were made.
