Donn Nelson, son of Golden State Warrior Coach Don Nelson and the senior Nelson’s assistant with the Warriors, is serving as a Lithuanian assistant.

Sarunas Marciulionis recruited Donn, who traveled to Lithuania two years ago to scout him.

“It’s different now,” Nelson says. “Where they used to have big red signs about Lenin, they have advertisements.

“It’s a real-life revolution. I’m as patriotic as you get. You grow up as a kid reading about Bunker Hill and the Boston Tea Party, and this is like a modern-day version. It’s just awesome to be part of it.”

Nelson said he had only one question about taking the job.

“The only thing that worried me was, ‘what if we beat the (United) States?’ ” he said.

“I wouldn’t want to spend the rest of my days in Lithuania.”

This a daily roundup of Olympic-related items from reporters in Barcelona from the Los Angeles Times, Newsday, Baltimore Sun and Hartford Courant, all Times-Mirror newspapers.
