In one of the day’s stranger mishaps, Turkish rower Ali Riza Bilal fell into Banyoles Lake when he made a bad stroke halfway through his heat in the men’s single sculls.

Bilal, Turkey’s only rower in Barcelona, capsized his boat when his blades got caught in the water, and a rescue launch had to retrieve him. Bilal had been last after 1,000 meters.

The U.S. team of Greg Springer of Costa Mesa and Jonathan Smith of Swamppscott, Mass., second to Germany in its double sculls heat, will compete in today’s repechage. Americans James Neil of Buffalo; Teo Bielefeld of Santa Fe, N.M.; Sean Hall of Arlington, Va.; Jack Rusher of Westwood, Mass., and Timothy Evans of Larkspur, Calif., was second in its coxed fours heat.
