OXNARD : Panel Recommends Uses for Old School

Ramona School, a former Oxnard elementary school, should be sold and converted to a use that helps neighboring residents, an advisory committee has recommended.

The Ramona School Disposition Advisory Committee presented its preferred uses for the school at 804 Cooper Road to the Oxnard Elementary School District board of trustees Tuesday. No action was taken by the board.

At the top of the list was a job skills center, followed by an adult education center, low- and moderate-income housing, youth center, small hospital, day-care center, sports center, vocational training facility, social services center for immigration and other counseling, and an outreach program for Oxnard College.

The 15-member committee, composed of district officials and residents, recommended that the site not be used for housing for the homeless, a swap meet, church organization or theater.

The committee’s report also asks that the board seek an appraisal of the 5.39-acre site and proceed with the sale.

The school, built in 1940, closed last year because it needed remodeling and the cost was prohibitive, said Sandra Herrera, the district’s assistant superintendent.

Also, the site was too small by today’s standards, she said.
