San Diego : USIU Saves With Cuts in Programs

Share

The new president of United States International University has announced $900,000 in savings by eliminating five vice president positions and by cutting back academic programs.

The San Diego-based university is being reorganized into two colleges: arts and sciences, and business administration. Four degree programs will be eliminated: the bachelor’s of fine arts, civil, and electronics engineering; and the master’s of fine arts.

Gary Hays, a former chancellor of the Minnesota State University system, took over the beleaguered private university in April. The 38-year-old university is trying to pay off debts totaling up to $30 million under a federal court-approved reorganization plan. The school filed for bankruptcy in December, 1990.

The university has until July, 1994 to satisfy its estimated 3,000 creditors. It has been operating in the black after eliminating numerous programs and costs in early 1991.
