528 Pounds of Pot Seized at Border

Border Patrol agents confiscated 528 pounds of marijuana Thursday at the border crossing in Tecate. The seizure was the third in the area in less than a week.

Agents saw a car driving north through a break in the border fence about 9:45 a.m., said Border Patrol spokesman Michael Gregg. When agents tried to stop the car, it turned back toward Mexico, stopping short because there was no apparent space to pass through the fence, Gregg said.

The driver abandoned the car and fled to Mexico on foot, Gregg said.

When agents searched the trunk, they found the marijuana divided into small packages. The drugs were worth an estimated $1 million, Gregg said.
