PASADENA : First Woman Chosen to Head School District

Share

The Pasadena Unified School District has chosen the first woman to become superintendent of the 22,000-student district.

Vera Vignes, 50, will replace Superintendent Philip Linscomb, who is retiring Aug. 30. She has been associate superintendent for personnel at Pasadena Unified for five years. A classics scholar, Vignes received a master’s degree in Latin from National University in Ireland and a doctorate in educational policy from USC, where her dissertation examined the restructuring of urban high schools.

As a personnel administrator, Vignes was responsible for hiring East Coast educational reformer Judy Codding as principal of Pasadena High School. Vignes worked with Codding to restructure that school, which state schools Supt. Bill Honig has praised as a state model in innovative education.
