Former King Assistant Wilson Joins North Stars’ Coaching Staff

Rick Wilson, an assistant coach with the Kings for the past three seasons, has left the organization to join the Minnesota North Stars.

Wilson, 41, had one year remaining on his contract with the Kings and had been negotiating with them for the past few weeks to coach their minor-league affiliate at Phoenix. But the North Stars, looking for an assistant coach, contacted Wilson and he reached an oral agreement with them.

For Wilson, a job with another NHL team became an option when Barry Melrose, the new Kings’ coach, decided to retain only one assistant, Cap Raeder. Many league observers were surprised by the decision because Wilson has been regarded as having a bright coaching future.

“Obviously, we’re a little disappointed in not getting Rick Wilson,” Phoenix General Manager Adam Keller told the Arizona Republic. “I thought he was very qualified and would be an excellent choice. But he opted to stay in the NHL and it’s difficult for one to stand in the way of a young man’s career and future. I guess now we move on to Phase 2.”

Phoenix has been without a coach since Ralph Backstrom resigned in June. Former King coach Robbie Ftorek has been mentioned as a candidate, but he is still under contract with the New Jersey Devils. Former King Charlie Simmer is another possible candidate.
