A Newhall-area man who Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators said has a history of violent crime has been identified as the gunman in the killing of one man and the wounding of another outside a Santa Clarita bar this week, deputies said Friday.

Jose Carlos Miramontes, 30, was being sought in connection with the killing of Alejandro Gonzales, 41, and the wounding of his brother, Roque Gonzales, 29, outside Herald’s Club.

The shooting occurred during a confrontation at 12:25 a.m. Tuesday outside the bar in the 24300 block of San Fernando Road, Deputy Benita Hinojos said.

Hinojos said the victims and Miramontes had argued inside the bar before they stepped outside and the shooting occurred.

Miramontes is a construction and farm worker who frequently looks for work in Newhall, Saugus and Santa Paula in Ventura County, Hinojos said.

A pickup truck believed to have been used by Miramontes to escape after the shooting was later found by police in Santa Paula, she said.

Miramontes is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall, 160 to 180 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes and a dark complexion.

He has several scars, including a 2- to 3-inch curved one over his left eyebrow and others on his nose, cheek and chin.

Hinojos said Miramontes “has a history of violent crimes and has served time in state prison,” but could not say what those previous crimes were.
