SEPULVEDA BASIN : Boating, Fishing Lake to Be Filled, Will Open Next Week

The San Fernando Valley’s only public boating and fishing lake will open next week when Lake Balboa in Sepulveda Basin is filled, city and federal officials have announced.

On Monday morning, reclaimed water from the Tillman sewage treatment plant will begin flowing into the 27.5-acre, 10-foot-deep lake, topping it off at 72 million gallons by Thursday, said Dick Ginevan, chief supervisor for the Valley office of the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.

The lake will not be stocked with trout and other fish until winter, but officials said a fly-casting cove will be open for practice immediately. The aquatics staff of the recreation department will begin offering canoeing classes in September. There will be no swimming in the lake, but two lifeguards will be on duty during daylight hours starting Monday, officials said.
