A 9-year-old Oceanside boy reported missing to police Sunday afternoon was sleeping peacefully in a small cardboard box, authorities said.

Neal George was playing in his parents’ grocery store at Oceanside Boulevard and South Crouch Street, officials said. His parents noticed he was missing and called police about 1 p.m., a police spokesman said.

A search was suspended about 4:45 p.m., when the boy woke up and emerged from the box, which was inside the store.

“The box couldn’t have been more than 14 inches by 20 inches,” a police spokesman said.

George, 4 feet tall and 90 pounds, had crawled inside and pulled the boxtop closed, police said.
