COUNTYWIDE : Indians on Peace Journey to Pay Visit
American Indian participants in “Peace and Dignity Journey 1992,” a relay run to Mexico, will stop in Ventura County on Wednesday to perform traditional dance and music ceremonies.
The Journey is a dual relay run that began earlier this year at starting points in Alaska and Argentina. The runners are expected to meet at the pyramids near Mexico City on Oct. 12, the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ landing in the Americas.
The run was organized to call attention to the impact that Europeans have had on the Western continents and the struggle that American Indians have faced in preserving their cultures, organizers said.
The runners are expected to arrive in Newbury Park between 6:30 and 7 p.m. at the National Park Service’s Rancho Sierra Vista-Satwiwa site in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
A local Indian leader, Mati Waiya, a Chumash of the Turtle clan, will join the runners as they approach the park along West Potrero Road.
The ceremony is open to the public. The runners will be camping near the Satwiwa Native American Culture Center on Potrero Road, just west of Wendy Drive.
