Lontayo Powers Sox in Tournament

Alex Lontayo hit a three-run home run Monday to help power the San Diego Sox to a 12-6 baseball victory over Cleveland in the AAU/USA Junior Olympics in Rochester, Minn.

With the victory, the Sox improved to 3-0 in pool play with games today against Norman, Okla., and Milwaukee. Cleveland fell to 3-1.

Lontayo, a junior at Castle Park High, went two for four with his home run keying a five-run fifth inning. Chris Lilly (Mira Mesa) went three for four with two RBIs, and Cole Liniak (San Dieguito) was two for two with two RBIs.

BOWLING

Larry Walker of Detroit and Diana Williams of Redmond, Wash., were the men’s and women’s leaders after the first round of the U.S. National Amateur Championships at the Brunswick Premier Lanes in Chula Vista.

Walker, a Team USA member, finished his six games with a 1,353-pin total, best among the 86-man field through the first of four qualifying rounds. Rod McLean of Las Vegas was second at 1,326.

Williams, 45, a relative unknown who bowls in a tiny six-lane center, led the 84-woman field with 1,320 pins. Lori Leonard of Edmond, Okla., and Geri Anderson of Waukesha, Wis., were tied for second at 1,285.

GOLF

Jill Wery of San Diego shot an opening-round 80 and is tied for 33rd in the U.S. Girls Junior Championships played at the 6,047-yard, par-72 Meridian Hills Country Club in Indianapolis. Wery is seven strokes behind co-leaders Erika Hayashida of Peru and Kelly Heffer of Denver. Debbie Kim of Poway is tied for 85th at 84.
