Larry and Alave Devers were at home in San Diego last Friday, watching the Olympics on TV.

They were not expecting to get on an airplane the next morning, fly to Spain and see their daughter win the 100-meter dash.

“A lot of people didn’t think I would win the race,” Gail Devers said. “When my parents saw how well I was doing in the heats, they knew they had to come over. They might have missed what’s got to be one of the most exciting times of my life.”

Devers was expected to do better in the hurdles than in the sprints. But she won the dash in 10.82 seconds--one of the most exciting times of her life.
