MOORPARK : Caltrans Still Backs Proposal for Station

Share

Caltrans officials said Tuesday that they will probably go ahead with their proposal to build a large, maintenance station at New Los Angeles Avenue and the Moorpark Freeway despite the objections of Moorpark officials.

City officials said they are concerned that the proposed facility, which will consist mainly of a large garage for state Department of Transportation equipment, would be an eyesore to motorists at the busy intersection.

“It’s unsightly,” Planning Commissioner Barton Miller said Tuesday. “There’s no need for them to be at that vital point.”

Responding to the city’s concerns, Caltrans will hold a public hearing on the building proposal at 7 p.m. Thursday at Moorpark City Hall.

A Caltrans official said Tuesday that the department has not found an alternative site suitable for building a new maintenance station.

“The city doesn’t want us there” at the New Los Angeles Avenue location, said Frank Bergen, a senior environmental planner for Caltrans. But “we are pretty set on this site.”

Caltrans has a facility at 512 W. Los Angeles Ave. in Moorpark, which it uses as a base for maintaining the Moorpark and Simi Valley freeways. But Bergen said the transportation department has outgrown the building.

Caltrans hopes to begin building in Moorpark in 1994.
