Video Rentals : ‘Hook’ Moving Up the Chart

Share

For the second straight week, “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” is nestled at the top of the Billboard magazine rental chart. Its primary competition is another chiller, “Cape Fear,” which surged back to No. 2 after slipping out of No. 1 position and down to No. 4 last week. Non-chiller movies continue to be shut out of the No. 1 spot. It looks as though “Bugsy” (No. 3), “Star Trek VI” (No. 4) and “The Addams Family”--a box-office blockbuster that seemed like a cinch No. 1 rental--may never reach the top. “Hook,” which some retailers say is a huge hit with the youngsters, jumped from No. 25 to No. 9.

* If “Hook” wasn’t around, this tale of mousedom’s Sherlock Holmes would probably be the biggest kidvid attraction. The animated feature jumped 10 places to No. 14 on the rental chart, but it’s bigger in the sales market, where it’s selling for $15-$20.
