Father Gregory Boyle

The departure of Father Boyle is a great loss to the Chicano community (“Father Boyle Bids Farewell to Homeboys,” July 27). Accompanying his departure is a challenge to the Latino community. We must begin to examine the gang problem. What is fueling it and how can we put out this self-destructive fire? We have “veteranos” who know how to reach these young brothers. We have psychologists who can give us a breakdown on how to effectively handle this problem that is destroying the community. We have teachers and professors who can assist in creating educational programs geared toward a Latino curriculum. We say that gang members must unite. However, what are the rest of us who do not necessarily live in the barrio, but are Raza nonetheless, willing to do? It is time to come together to stop the violence that is tearing apart our community.
