OJAI : Report on Proposed Golf Course Gets OK

A county commission gave a preliminary nod Wednesday to an environmental report for a proposed golf course east of Ojai.

The public hearing, held Wednesday at the county Government Center, focused on the developer’s response to citizens’ concerns about traffic and water usage.

The 204-acre development, planned by the Farmont Corp., has been controversial since its proposal more than five years ago.

More than 15 citizens, most of them Ojai Valley residents, testified at the meeting Wednesday. The majority expressed concerns that Farmont’s efforts to ease water and traffic use--which included the use of drought-resistant turf and van pools--were insufficient.

“Fifty single-family homes wouldn’t cause as much strain on resources as this development would,” said Alasdair Coyne, an Ojai resident.

The Ventura County Environmental Report Review Commission voted unanimously to direct county staff to prepare a draft of the final environmental report, which will include public comment and responses by Farmont.

The draft will be ready by Aug. 26, officials said. If it is approved, the county Planning Commission will begin a review of the Farmont development this fall, officials said.
