NEWPORT BEACH : Woman Dies When Thrown From Car

Share

A 35-year-old Santa Monica woman died today when she was thrown from a car that careened out of control in an unincorporated area near Newport Beach.

The woman was in an eastbound car on newly opened Newport Coast Drive near San Joaquin Hills Road about 2:50 p.m. when the driver of the 1988 Saab swerved to avoid metal in the roadway, said California Highway Patrol Officer Bill Wedderburn.

The driver lost control and the Saab hit another car, then rolled over, throwing the woman from the car. She was not wearing a seat belt.

The car, which a CHP dispatcher said was reportedly an open convertible, ended up in the westbound lanes, which were ordered closed until about 7 p.m. Traffic on the eastbound lanes was reported to be heavily congested.

The identity of the woman, who died at the crash scene, was withheld pending notification of relatives.
