The City Council has passed legislation that would require condom vending machines to be installed in the city’s more than 800 bars and restaurants.

The bill, passed Wednesday, is aimed at helping contain the spread of AIDS and other diseases, according to its chief sponsor, Councilman David Scondras.

Mayor Raymond L. Flynn has 15 days to sign or veto the measure after which it would become law automatically if he has taken no action. A spokesman for Flynn did not say what action the mayor will take.
