The Gleitsman Foundation is accepting nominations for the Sakharov Award, a newly established $100,000 honor to be presented biennially, starting in the spring of 1993.
Named for the late Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, the award will recognize an individual living outside the United States who has been a catalyst for social change in the world community.
The international board of judges includes Javier Perez de Cuellar, former secretary general of the United Nations, and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Bishop Desmond Tutu. Alexey Semyonov, son of Sakharov’s widow, Elena Bonner, is an adviser.
Nominations will be accepted through Oct. 30. Forms are available from the Gleitsman Foundation, 6100 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 400, Los Angeles 90048-5111.
The Los Angeles-based Gleitsman Foundation was established by philanthropist Alan Gleitsman to encourage social activism. It also recognizes domestic activism through its “People Who Make a Difference” Award.
