LOS ALAMITOS : 2 Will Challenge Mayor, Councilman

Share

Two residents who ran unsuccessfully for the City Council will try again in November by challenging incumbent Mayor Ronald Bates and Councilman Charles E. Sylvia.

William J. Umbel, 57, a letter carrier, and Marianne Stiles, an electronics data processor, were the only two residents besides Bates and Sylvia to file candidacy papers by the 5 p.m. deadline Friday. The four will compete for at-large seats on the council.

Sylvia, 58, an electrical engineer, was elected to the council in January, 1975. Bates, 46, a businessman, was elected to the council in 1988.

In his last bid for office in 1978, Umbel finished fifth in a field of 11 candidates. The 25-year resident said in an earlier interview that he decided to run again because he is dissatisfied with the council’s decisions and believes that there is a need for fresh faces and ideas.

Stiles finished last among four candidates when she ran four years ago. She could not be reached for comment Friday.
