LOCAL NOTES : Allison Struggles at Start, Loses in Junior Final

Alicia Allison of Santa Ana lost to Jamie Koizumi of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, 5 and 4 in the final of the U.S. Junior girls’ championships Saturday at Indianapolis.

“My driver wasn’t working; it was a struggle,” Allison said. “Then my irons left me.”

Allison, a 16-year-old Foothill High student, struggled off the tee. She lost the first four holes, with bogeys on the first three. She could not make up any ground despite birdies on the eighth and ninth holes and trailed by four after the front nine.

Allison lost No. 10 after driving into the rough and the next four holes were halved, allowing Koizumi to clinch the match.

“I went a match further this year and I’ll be back next year to try to improve again,” Allison said.

Bob May of La Habra remains two shots ahead after the second round of the $125,000 Ben Hogan Wichita Charity Classic in Kansas.

May shot five-under-par 67 and is at 13-under 131 for 36 holes. Lee Porter is second after a 65.

Summer Brown finished second in the girls’ 14-15 three-meter springboard and four teammates from the Mission Viejo Nadadores were among the top six in their events in the U.S. Junior Olympic Diving Championships at Austin, Tex.

Brown finished with 439.35 points, one place ahead of teammate Amy Sloan, who had 430.55.

Sandy Zubrin took third in the girls’ 16-18 three-meter springboard, Erica Sorgi was third in the girls’ 13-and-under one-meter springboard, and Tyce Routson sixth in the boys’ 16-18 three-meter springboard.

David Warady of Huntington Beach added more than two hours to his lead in the Runner’s World Trans America Footrace.

Warady completed the 32.95 miles from Cambridge City, Ind., to Lewisburg, Ohio, in five hours 11 minutes 40 seconds, finishing second in the stage to Switzerland’s Milan Milanovic, 4:51:13.

Warady leads Tom Rogozinski of Pittsburgh by 16:19:30. Rogozinski, who has a stress fracture in his foot, was 13th, in 5:11:40.

The Orange County Batbusters won their three games Saturday in the 14-and-under division of the Junior Olympic Amateur Softball Assn. national tournament at Midland, Tex.

The Batbusters, 4-0 in the tournament, defeated the Olathe (Kan.) Legend, 4-0, Montclair (Calif.) Classics Red Team, 10-0, and the Montclair (Calif.) Classics Black Team, 9-0. The final two games were shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule.

Three Orange County teams--Tustin, Mission del Norte and Central Orange--were winners in the Bobby Sox Division of the Bobby Sox National Tournament of Champions in Cerritos.

In the American Girls’ Division (ages 12-14), Central Orange topped Madera, 7-1, and Mission del Norte of Mission Viejo lost, 7-3, to Navajo.

Garden Grove No. 2 was a 4-3 winner over Pearl City (Hawaii.) in the Prep Division (ages 15-18), and Buena Park defeated Chula Vista, 1-0, in a Prep Division game.

Scott Geoffrion of Huntington Beach equaled his national elapsed time record of 7.139 seconds in the pro stock class in qualifying for the $880,444 National Hot Rod Assn. Northwest Nationals in Kent, Wash.

Eric Lin of Anaheim and David Roditi of San Clemente each won second-round doubles matches at the U.S. Tennis Assn. boys’ 18 national tennis championships at Kalamazoo, Mich.

Lin and Howard Kim of La Canada teamed for a 6-4, 6-2, victory over Chris Groer of Knoxville Tenn., and Scott Lebovitz Marietta, Ga.

Roditi and Ross Lowell of Oceanside beat David Oosterbaan of Kalamazoo and Roy Sehgal of Foster City, Calif., 6-3, 6-4.
