Downey : City OKs $200,000 to Fix Fire Alarms at 4 Schools
The City Council unanimously agreed Tuesday to give the Downey Unified School District $200,000 in federal funds to repair and replace the fire alarm systems at four schools.
Last week, the city was considering seeking criminal charges against the district for repeatedly failing to correct the problems at Gauldin Elementary and Warren and Downey high schools.
“The work is in progress and should be done before school starts,” school board President Mary Tesoriero told the council after thanking members for the money.
Downey fire officials have been citing the district since 1991 for failing to comply with requests that the schools’ fire alarm systems be brought up to minimum state requirements, Fire Marshal Dennis Groat said. Some of the schools are still equipped with alarms dating to 1936.
