Hawaiian Gardens : Deadline Expires on Recall Campaign Against Ruggeri
An attempt to recall Councilman Domenic Ruggeri failed when petitions were not filed before the deadline Monday, according to City Clerk Carol J. Dorfmeyer.
It was the second recall move to collapse in the last two weeks. Recall action against Mayor Kathleen Navejas died because petitions were not filed by the July 28 deadline.
Both council members were facing the same set of charges because of an unusual turn of events at the April 28 council meeting. Resident Joe (Cabrera) Zermeno served Navejas with a recall notice, accusing her of corruption and abuse of power. She had the notice copied, crossed out her name, printed in Ruggeri’s name and asked resident Rene Flores to sign it. Flores then gave the notice to Ruggeri.
Ruggeri denied Navejas’ claim that he was behind the recall move against her. Both Navejas and Ruggeri denied the charges against them.
