Chrysler Presses Banks on Credit Extension: The auto maker said it was in the final stages of crucial negotiations with its worldwide bankers to extend a $6.8-billion line of credit in time to help sell its new LH line of mid-size cars. Chrysler spokesman Steve Harris said the nation’s No. 3 car maker still needs to reach agreement with no more than four of the 152 banks in a syndicate that provides credit for Chrysler Financial Corp., which offers car loans to buyers. Although the outstanding banks represent only about $100 million of the $6.8-billion package, unanimous agreement is needed for the credit line to be extended for three years. It expires next year. Harris declined to comment on a published report that Chrysler had asked the Federal Reserve to intercede on its behalf in negotiations with a German bank in the consortium. Chrysler’s shares fell 25 cents to $20.625 in active New York Stock Exchange trading.
