Riverwalk Critique

In the (Aug. 6) Times, I read with interest Dirk Sutro’s article titled “A Blueprint to Live By at Riverwalk?” When employed by Chevron Land & Development Co. in the ‘80s, I was responsible for the planning and approval of the Riverwalk project.

Needless to say, I was surprised to read Sutro’s characterization of the Riverwalk master plan as an “awkward collection of isolated apartments, condominiums, offices, retail and hotels,” since the plan was endorsed by the Sierra Club (as indicated in the article) and was the recipient of awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects and the American Planning Assn. for design excellence. It appears that Sutro has mistaken the conceptual master plan for an architectural solution, which it was never intended to be.

Riverwalk’s premier location at the gateway to Mission Valley holds great promise and special responsibilities. San Diego is indeed fortunate that this unique property is in the hands of a developer with the capacity to take the longer-term view, particularly in this difficult market.
