Monorail Is People’s Choice

Share

On Aug. 26, the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission will be faced with the decision of certifying the final Environmental Impact Report for monorail on the Ventura Freeway.

Along with their discussion of the EIR will be input from the general public, as well as the usual rhetoric and half-truths from monorail-on-the-freeway critics about how it will destroy exclusive neighborhoods south of the Ventura Freeway.

If there is ever to be any hope of getting people out of their cars and into a rapid transit system, a highly visible technology such as monorail on the Ventura Freeway is sure to accomplish that goal. Because it is the busiest east-west corridor in the San Fernando Valley, individual drivers will be reminded, on a daily basis, how much less frustrating and time-consuming the Ventura Freeway Monorail would be, when compared to sitting in an automobile in bumper-to-bumper freeway traffic.

Obviously 102,810 voters agree that monorail on the Ventura Freeway makes good sense. That’s why they voted for monorail over Metro Rail, light rail and even a “no rail” choice in the June, 1990, San Fernando Valley advisory vote.

What’s most interesting is that 48.5% of the voters who live in the 72 freeway-impacted precincts voted for monorail on the Ventura Freeway.
