HUNTINGTON BEACH : Arnold Comes Out on Top--of Ballot

The luck of the draw has finally smiled on handyman George Arnold, a perennial City Council candidate and a relentless City Hall critic. He’s hoping that his good luck will propel him to victory in the Nov. 3 election.

Arnold’s name will appear first on the city ballot, the most desirable location, particularly when hopefuls will grapple for any advantage in the field of 14 candidates during the general election.

“All right! It’s the first time I’ve been No. 1 in five times,” said the 63-year-old Arnold, who was given the news while selling T-shirts and sweat shirts at the foot of the city’s pier to raise funds for the coming campaign. “It helps out, man. It helps out 100%.”

Corona del Mar political consultant David Ellis agreed, saying “it’s tremendously important” for candidates to find their names at the top of a crowded ballot.

Arnold garnered 4,000 votes in 1988 and 5,981 in 1990.

Here’s how the city ballot order will shape up: Arnold, Dave Sullivan, Silva, Bob Steuart, Scott Borzie, Victor Leipzig, Vida Martin, MacAllister, Brian McAneny, Tom Hyatt, Susie Newman, Daniel Traxler, William Moore Thompson and Mark Porter.

In the race for city clerk, incumbent Connie Brockway will have a top-of-the-ballot advantage over challenger Mark Miller.
