Republicans on Abortion

It is difficult to imagine a more confused position on the question of abortion than the one now taken by President Bush and the Republican Party. The platform writing committee of the party has taken the position that even women who have been the victims of rape and incest should not be accorded the right to choose an abortion: The President and vice president say they would support members of their own families if they made the decision to have an abortion for whatever reason.

Both the President and vice president come from wealthy, influential families; by instinct and tradition these two men realize that their first duty is to protect their families from the power of government and the rant of other people’s religious convictions.

What they fail to acknowledge is that all women must have the same rights as the daughters of presidents; that all families must be protected, not just the families of the wealthy and powerful.
