Montebello : City Rejects Environmental Study of Trash-Sorting Plant

Share

The City Council has rejected a plan to study the environmental effects of a facility to sort recyclable materials from trash.

After several residents objected that the proposed center would bring in waste from other cities and increase traffic and pollution, the council voted 4 to 1 to reject a study for the proposed facility at 1605 Chapin Road. Councilman Edward C. Pizzorno dissented.

The Planning Commission had recommended that the council approve the study, which would have cost World Recovery & Recycling $77,000. Instead, the council asked city staff to meet with the current trash hauler to propose a curbside recycling program to bring the city into compliance with a state law mandating a 25% reduction in the amount of trash being hauled to landfills by 1995.
