From Staff and Wire Reports

Two men have pleaded not guilty to charges of murder in a case where there is a wealth of circumstantial evidence--but no body.

Keith Monroe Hutchinson, 26, and David Andrea Self, 31, were arrested Friday, one week after a man they are suspected of slaying disappeared from his Serra Mesa condominium.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Jeffrey Fraser said after the two were arraigned Tuesday that the body of Clarence Williams, 35, has not been recovered, but he expressed optimism authorities would find it.

Fraser said Hutchinson and Self were the last people to be with Williams on Aug. 7. The prosecutors also said the motive for the apparent killing was that Williams owed Hutchinson $450.

Additionally, a lot of blood was found in Williams’ apartment in the 9100 block of Village Glen and in a vehicle the two men were in when arrested, Fraser said. Initial testing indicates blood at both places matched that of Williams, type A-positive which is found in only about 3% of the population.

San Diego police recovered several pounds of marijuana in the trunk of the vehicle when the two were arrested.

Hutchinson and Self are being held in lieu of $2 million bail. A preliminary hearing was set for Oct. 7.
