ORANGE : Council Votes to Cut Own Salaries 10%
- Share via
City Council members voted unanimously Tuesday to cut their monthly salaries and expense accounts by 10% in an effort to show municipal employees that they are also willing to make sacrifices to balance the budget.
“It is a symbolic move to show we are willing to share in any pay cut,” said Mayor Gene Beyer, who originally proposed the salary reduction.
The council is considering asking city employees to take a 10% salary reduction if state funding is reduced.
But the council pay cut became mired in politics as Beyer and Councilwoman Joanne Coontz, his opponent in the November mayoral election, fought over the terms of the pay cut.
