Thousands of hungry emus are eating crops and venturing onto roadways as they flee a drought in the outback, farmers and wildlife officers said Wednesday.

Flocks of up to 300 of the huge flightless birds are migrating south from dry areas in the states of New South Wales and Queensland.

Drivers have complained of birds running in front of traffic, and body shops have reported a rise in car-emu collisions.

Fences rarely stop emus, which can stand 5 feet tall.
