The board of the Simi Valley Unified School District has appointed Jim Stevenson, a longtime teacher and administrator in the district, to serve as principal of Hillside Junior High School.

The school board appointed Stevenson to his new post during a late-night closed session Tuesday.

Stevenson, 37, replaces Kathy Scroggin, who recently was named principal of Simi Valley High School. Stevenson has served as a teacher and administrator in the district since 1981.

“My first objective is to listen and learn and get a handle on the people here,” said Stevenson, an assistant principal at Royal High School for the past four years. “The school is running very well and I hope to find ways to make it run better.”

Stevenson said he will also be preparing for the conversion of Hillside from a junior high school, serving grades seven through nine, to a middle school, which will include grades six through eight.

In other business, board members discussed the possibility of establishing a school information system that would allow parents to retrieve homework assignments, lunch menus and school activity plans via telephone.

Lowell Schultze, information services director for the district, told the board about a voice mail program costing $50 a month for 100 telephone “mailboxes.” Teachers would record a two-minute message for parents that could be retrieved by dialing a phone number and entering a specific code.

The board asked staff to explore the possibility of setting up such a system at two elementary schools as a pilot program.
