LOS ANGELES : Elite Police Unit’s Offices Reopened; Probe Goes On

Share

Los Angeles Police Chief Willie L. Williams on Thursday said he has allowed officers in the department’s Organized Crime Intelligence Division to return to their 6th Street headquarters, although an investigation of the controversial unit continues.

Williams closed the division’s offices in the 200 block of East 6th Street and at Los Angeles International Airport, sealed its files and temporarily reassigned about 45 officers July 9 after the release of a book alleging that the elite squad had spied on politicians and celebrities.

The paperback--titled “L.A. Secret Police: Inside the LAPD Elite Spy Network”--was written by former Detective Mike Rothmiller, who left the department nearly 10 years ago, and journalist Ivan Goldman.

Williams said the return of the officers to their headquarters will not hinder the investigation, which he called “far from complete.”
