California / IN BRIEF : SAN JOSE : Report Clears Jail Officials of Brutality
An investigation into the Santa Clara County Jail system cleared jail administrators of alleged “systemic violence” against inmates. However, the investigation report confirmed that some male guards had been having sex with female inmates. The investigation was prompted by allegations ranging from brutality to illegal sale of steroids to inmates. The report called sexual contact between guards and inmates inappropriate. Santa Clara County Dist. Atty. George Kennedy said he will call for the Legislature to ban consensual sex between guards and inmates. Investigators examined 10 of the 115 allegations of brutality lodged. However, they said, only one case could have been prosecuted, but the inmate who was allegedly assaulted disappeared after being paroled.
