TV Show Adds New Meaning to ‘Fashion Police’

COMPILED BY GAILE ROBINSON

Just hearing the title of the new CBS cop series, “The Hat Squad” (premiering Sept. 16), made Listen’s ears perk up. Not for the crimebusters, you understand, but for the hats. We wanted to know everything. Executive Producer Bill Nuss says the series is sort of an hommage to some real-life L.A. police officers in the ‘40s known as the “hat squad” because they wore fedoras and spent all their money on clothes. In the ‘90s version, Don Michael Paul, Nestor Serrano and Billy Warlock will also wear old-fashioned fedoras with cool-looking Italian suits, ties, T-shirts and Doc Marten shoes. Hmmm--maybe there are fashion police.

* SIGNING DOUBLE: There will be gifts, informal modeling and music by Orange County deejay Scorchman. But the biggest attraction could be the company chief. Sunday’s opening of the Mossimo shop in Bullock’s South Coast Plaza Men’s Store will feature Mossimo Giannulli, who will be signing autographs. No big deal, you say? Well, Giannulli’s specialty is autographing the hip, trendy sportswear and activewear that bears his printed signature. He says his felt-tip trick was forced on him during a recent appearance in Stockton. To his surprise, scores of teens asked to have their purchases autographed. We bet their parents are thrilled: This must mean they never plan to wash those clothes.

* SUNDAY START-UP: Anyone who’s ever attended the Emmy Awards knows that getting one’s hair and makeup done is always a problem because the show takes place on Sunday, a day when the salons are closed. That’s one reason Jose Eber has decided to open his Two Rodeo Drive salon every Sunday. And on Aug. 30, the day of the Emmy Awards, he’s offering a 50% discount. A haircut, styling and makeup application will be priced at $60 (usually $120 or more).

* MADAM PRESIDENT’S CLOSET: Six award-winning costume designers have been peering into the future, only to see a woman President. Naturally, she’s fabulously dressed in their designs. To help the fashion aspect of the fantasy come true, May Co. and DuPont sponsored the collection, titled, “Inaugural Week Fashions for the First Woman President,” which will be presented Sept. 4 at the new May Co. store in Santa Clarita’s Valencia Town Center. The designs include Emmy-winner Pete Menefee’s black velvet gown, an inaugural ball gown by Elsa Zamparelli (nominated for an Oscar for “Dancing With Wolves”), a purple suit for the swearing-in ceremony from Murphy Brown’s Bill Hargate and, since this is a costumer’s fantasy, a gown and negligee for inauguration morning by “Moonlighting” designer Robert Turturice.
