The cousin of a liquor store owner was shot twice during a robbery by nine men at the East San Diego store, police said Friday.

Hathen Odish, 36, was shot in the left leg and arm after he and store owner Frank Sako followed a group of men out of Trade Winds Liquor in the 5300 block of Redwood Street after they took beer without paying, said Bill Robinson, a San Diego Police Department spokesman.

Paramedics took the injured man to Mercy Hospital for treatment, Robinson said.

The nine men entered the liquor store shortly after 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Robinson said. One of them purchased a bag of potato chips while the other eight went to the refrigerator case and took four 12-packs of beer, he said.

When the men left without paying for the beer, Sako and Odish followed them half a block to a white Nissan pickup truck, Robinson said. During the confrontation, one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and fired four shots.

The men escaped in the pickup truck.
