3 Honored for 45,000 Hours of Service

Ernestine Allerhand and Hilde Keneley, both of Laguna Beach, and Evelin Alleman, of Laguna Niguel all have the spirit of volunteering.

So much so that they were honored by the South Coast Medical Center Auxiliary for their combined 45,000 hours of service at the Laguna Beach Community Clinic where they greet visitors, transport patients and provide other hospital services.

Alleman has 18,000 hours of service, Allerhand has 14,000 hours and Keneley has 13,000.

The three and other volunteers were honored at the auxiliary’s recent awards breakfast at the El Adobe restaurant in San Juan Capistrano.

Helen Dell-Imagine and Carole Radzins, both Orange residents, have been elected as board members of the National Issues Forum of Orange County, a nonpartisan organization that conducts local forums.

Dell-Imagine, a teacher and community volunteer, is former president of the Central Orange County YWCA.

Radzins, vice president of the Saddleback Memorial Medical Center Foundation in Laguna Beach, is a former executive director of the North Orange County YWCA.

Daisuke Tsujimoto, a Corona del Mar High School student and Newport Beach resident, was awarded the Rensselaer Medal and a $5,000 scholarship from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., as a top student in science and mathematics.

Noting their academic excellence, leadership and concern for others, the Smith College Club of Orange County awarded the college’s Book Award to Carly Andrews of Laguna Beach High; Karen Gross, Laguna Hills High; Mary Toal, Mission Viejo High, and Maggie Weed, El Toro High.

The award from the college in Northampton, Mass., was presented by Lucinda Prewitt, college alumna and club member, who said 35 students from Orange County are attending Smith this year.

Former Estancia High School graduate Dr. Bradford T. Flagghas completed his medical education and returned to the Costa Mesa-Newport Beach area to begin private practice in medicine at Newport Family Medicine in Newport Beach.

Corona del Mar resident Maryann Maloney, director of government relations and special events at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, was appointed by Gov. Pete Wilson to the Licensed Vocational Nursing Commission.

The commission was formed to attract young people to vocational nursing and to create guidelines for maintaining quality care standards for all health care professionals.

Garden Grove Elks Lodge initiated Hugh Calkins, Jerome Clinkenbeard, Gerald Clisson, Jerry Cooney, Charles Harris, Robert Jones, Robbie Kalterer, George Langer, Thomas Lyford, Larry Mandy, DuWayne Metz, Charles Mitchell, Peter Nevarez, Ken Ross and Darrell Schmidt as new members.

Melina Ranii, a senior who maintains a 4.14 grade point average at Sonora High School in Fullerton, has been named student board member of the Fullerton Joint Union High School District.

New instructors hired by Cypress College this fall include Frank Pinon Barajas, history; Hoag Chi and July Reed, English as a second language; Anna Cowley Herzog, nursing/medical surgery, and David Schweiger, hospitality management.
