DUELING MEMOS: In a recent letter, County Supervisor Tom Riley pleaded with Assemblyman Gil Ferguson to help resolve the state budget logjam without cutting county funds. The Newport Beach Republican fired back, accusing the county of “interference in the private sector,” high business fees and failure to cut staff. Riley was mum. But Supervisor Harriett Wieder says: “We’re one of the most fiscally conservative counties in the state. We need his help, not his criticism to fix the problems facing the county.”
