Today is your chance to enter a Polynesian paradise--and help people with HIV and AIDS.
Being Alive South Bay, a nonprofit, all-volunteer group, is holding a Journey to Polynesia fund-raiser from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Rancho Palos Verdes. For the price of admission--$20 for adults and $15 for children--visitors to the Catalina Room at Long Point, formerly the site of Marineland, can enjoy all the trappings of a tropical island luau.
The Iolani Polynesian Dance Troupe from Hawaii will headline the event, which will also feature live music from the band Island Events. And as in any good luau, there will be Polynesian delicacies such as roasted Kalua pig and side dishes of poi. The food and the live entertainment are being donated.
The luau will also feature a raffle with more than 100 prizes ranging from free haircuts to a $1,200 Hawaiian trip for two. Donated by local businesses, the prizes also include oil changes, dinners at local restaurants and $500 Marriott hotel vacations. Raffle tickets will sell for $1 each.
Money raised at the luau will make up most of Being Alive South Bay’s annual budget. Using private and corporate donations, the group provides South Bay HIV and AIDS patients with medication, transportation to and from hospitals, and house and hospital visits.
The group can also provide referrals to doctors, help patients find insurance, and help organize support groups for patients and their friends and relatives.
