Rich Gannon’s 52-yard touchdown pass play to Anthony Carter capped a 35-point first half and the visiting Minnesota Vikings routed the Cleveland Browns, 56-3. The Vikings are unbeaten in three exhibitions under new Coach Dennis Green and have outscored their opponents, 110-6. They scored on eight of 10 possessions.

Gannon completed 12 of 14 passes for 191 yards, including scoring passes to Carter on the Vikings’ first and last plays of the first half.

Dave Krieg enjoyed a rousing debut in his new city, passing for 160 yards and two touchdowns in two quarters as the hometown Kansas City Chiefs trounced the Buffalo Bills, 35-0, handing the AFC champions their first exhibition shutout in 22 years. Krieg, the 12-year Seattle Seahawk veteran signed as a free agent, played only in the first half.

Running back Christian Okoye signed a series of three one-year contracts with the Chiefs. . . . Coach George Seifert of the San Francisco 49ers said that an magnetic resonance imaging test taken of quarterback Joe Montana’s right elbow showed some improvement. “But to say that he’ll do more than just throw to see how it feels to throw, I couldn’t say,” Seifert said . . . Randall Cunningham, who has a sprained groin, will be rested as a precaution in the Philadelphia Eagles’ final preseason game Thursday night against the New York Jets.
