The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Ventura County has extended the deadline for participating in this year’s Fiestas Patrias Parade, and will accept applications through Monday.

The eighth annual parade will be at noon Sept. 12 and is one of the first events in the two-day Fiestas Patrias celebration, which commemorates Mexican Independence Day. There is no fee to participate in the parade.

Featured in the parade, which will travel up Oxnard’s C Street from Eighth Street to Palm Drive, will be high school marching bands, equestrian units, novelty cars and floats. Last year, more than 100 units participated, said parade co-chairwoman Patricia Lopez.

This year’s theme of “New Horizons: 500 Years--the Voyage Continues,” emphasizes the increasing importance of the Hispanic market, Lopez said. She said participants are encouraged to choose costumes and music that correspond to the parade’s theme.

Entry blanks may be obtained by calling Lopez at 486-0266, or visiting the chamber office at 555 South A St., Suite 185, in Oxnard.
