HOLDING STEADY: Gifts to UC Irvine dropped 1.2% last year, not bad in recessionary times, say campus leaders. . . . Gifts from foundations more than doubled last year and accounted for about 36% of the total $21.9 million. The biggest single gift was $2 million from the Joan Irvine Smith and Athalie R. Clarke Foundation. Nearly half the total raised went to support campus research. “This is a real vote of confidence for UCI,” says Vice Chancellor Kathleen Jones.
Declining Donations
Private gifts to UC Irvine have fallen steadily since 1989, when an $8.5-million bequest boosted donations to a record high (In millions of dollars). 1987-88: $19.3 1988-89: $32.8 1989-90: $27.4 1990-91: $22.2 1991-92: $21.9 Source: UC Irvine
