The Pasadena Symphony Assn. has extended the contract of Music Director Jorge Mester through June, 1996.

The extension is a three-year addition to the current contract, which expires on July 1, 1993. Mester was appointed to the position in August, 1984.

Mester, 57, studied conducting at Juilliard and has taught there. He is conductor laureate of the Aspen Festival and has been a guest conductor of orchestras and opera companies throughout the world. He was music director of the Louisville Orchestra for 12 years.

The Pasadena Symphony begins its 65th season in October.

* Vincent M. Fortanasce, an Arcadia neurologist, has been elected a member of the Los Angeles County Medical Ethics Board.

Fortanasce is chairman of the Bioethics Committee at Methodist Hospital in Arcadia and has established ethics committees at Santa Teresita Hospital in Duarte and St. Luke Medical Center in Pasadena. He teaches neurology and ethics at the USC School of Medicine.

Jack Leighton Rugh of San Gabriel has published, “Labor Relations, World War II, Before, During and After,” about the history of the labor movement in California from 1937 to 1971. The $25 book is available from Rugh at 5555 N. Charlotte Ave., San Gabriel 91776.
